Autobiography of Elijah Averett, before 1886.

Negative photocopy of an autobiography by Elijah Averett, covering the years from approximately 1810 to the 1860s. Averett recalls his childhood and conversion to Mormonism, his service in the Black Hawk War, his participation in constructing the Nauvoo Temple, his service in Stephen Markham's pioneer company, and his travels to Utah. The autobiography focuses on the Gallatin Election Day Battle in 1838, the subsequent Mormon War, the expulsion of the Mormons from Missouri, the death of Joseph Smith, and the leadership of Brigham Young. In the handwriting of Averett's son, Murray Averett. The manuscript also contains a brief appendix to Averett's autobiography by his son, Murray Averett, which mentions hostilities with the Piute Indians and Averett's work on the Pipe Springs Fort. Murray Averett also includes a biography of his mother, Johanna Christina Neilson Averett, from the time of her birth in Denmark in 1837 until her death in Utah in 1924. He focuses on Johanna's initial prejudice against the Mormons, her eventual conversion, and her family's voyage to Utah.
